In this post, we take a look at another premium backgammon set from Manopoulos. The striking Manopoulos Pin Up Girls Backgammon set is part of the Manopoulos Creative Collection. It’s a step away from the typically traditional designs of the quality backgammon sets we have previously recommended. This is because it’s a playful, contemporary piece, although the artwork of the pin up girls themselves probably dates back to the 1940s.
Construction
The cheeky (literally) pin up girls on the outer cabinet is the first thing you notice about this striking board. When you open the set, you see that the points are laid out with alternating pin up girls and checked green triangles. We imagine there would be plenty of arguments over which player gets to play using the pin up girls. The points are clearly printed rather than inlaid. Apart from the points, the playing field has a mottled background of pink and white.
The board doesn’t include the normal slots for holding the checkers that have been borne off. This is not a major issue. The entire set is eye-catching, it would be easy to imagine this set occupying pride of place in a hipster cafe. According to all of the online resources we found, the cabinet is made of ‘laminated wood’. Likewise, the playing field is simply made from a ‘wood veneer’. Manopoulos is normally quite specific about the materials it uses and how the set is made.
Accessories
The set includes 4 plastic dice and a doubling cube. The white and black checkers are made of acrylic and have a marbleised effect. They are finger-dish checkers, which makes it easier to slide them around the playing field. There is also a synthetic organza drawstring bag for storing all of the accessories. Finally, the set we viewed did not include dice cups.
Dimensions
This premium backgammon set weighs approximately 2kg. The dimensions when closed are: 7.1cm x 47.2cm x 25.2cm and when open: 3.6cm x 47.2cm x 50.3cm (H x W x D).
Conclusion
This premium backgammon set is cheeky, different and fun. However, there is a bit of uncertainty about the materials that have been used, but Manopoulos produce quality backgammon boards and we don’t see why this one would be any different. It would be worth adding some dice cups to the set. If you are looking for a contemporary and unconventional piece the Pin Up Girls Backgammon set could be the perfect choice. RRP price at the time of writing was £129.99.
As much as I love this backgammon set, I don’t think I’d be allowed to have it. I normally play in a backgammon chouette with my wife and this is just too cheeky! There is no way she would allow me to play it.
Hi Roly, I think I’m in the same situation. Nice looking backgammon set, as you say, very “cheeky”. Enjoy the backgammon chouettes, a great way to play backgammon with friends. Thanks for taking the time to comment, Jason.
