Dal Negro Luxury Wooden Backgammon Set – London.

Last updated on April 18, 2024

We were impressed (mostly) from the moment we saw this Dal Negro London wooden backgammon set. It has a solid walnut cabinet/frame with maple (light) and stained tulipwood (dark) points. Both maple and tulipwood are considered sustainable woods, if responsibly sourced. The parquetry lid with its geometric patterns is stunning. Even unopened, this quality backgammon set is a decorative addition to any room.

Construction

It has a magnetic locking mechanism, which is fine for home use, but I don’t think it is suitable as a travel backgammon set. We prefer simple latches or locks to keep the unit closed. Metal furnishings, particularly brass, are a nice cosmetic addition to any luxury backgammon board. You need a secure lock for the backgammon set to be used for travel in case the unit is dropped. It also has hidden hinges, which gives the set a genuine streamlined look. We wonder, however, what the repair cost would be compared to standard hinges should this set ever be dropped and damaged in transit.

Accessories

The boxwood checkers are very nice and tactile. They suit this backgammon set because boxwood is a sustainable timber and they are perfectly sized for the points. The major issue I have with this backgammon set is the rubber dice cups. They belong to a true budget backgammon set. They may be ‘rubber’, but we have a hard time determining if these are a natural material or paired with plastic. We would have preferred paying a premium for some genuine boxwood dice cups to go with the checkers. The dice are plastic, which is standard for virtually all backgammon sets. As per usual, at Deluxe Backgammon we would have these replaced with wooden dice for social play.

Dimensions

The dimensions of this quality backgammon set when closed are: 5.5cm x 50.5cm x 30.8cm and open: 2.7cm x 50.5cm x 61.8cm (Height x Width x Depth). It weighs 2.3km, but it feels heavier. We think this is an illusion because of the robust construction of this backgammon set. Heavier backgammon sets and pieces are desirable because the checkers are less likely to be moved inadvertently during play. It feels solid when you hold it and you know it has been designed and manufactured to last several lifetimes.

Conclusion

The Dal Negro London is a stunning luxury backgammon set and would look fantastic as a centrepiece in any dining room or study. Its robust construction and durable materials mean that this set is likely to last generations. This is exactly what we are looking for in a Deluxe Backgammon set. Replace the rubber dice cups with wooden pieces and buy this set as a family heirloom. RRP at the time of writing is £295.95.

Nice pattern on the outer cabinet, pity you can’t see it when you are playing. Overall, it looks like a good quality backgammon set, I wouldn’t mind one myself.
