Philos 1125 Delos Backgammon set

Last updated on October 30, 2022

Today we are taking a look at another Philos backgammon set. The Philos 1125 Delos backgammon set. We have taken a look at a couple of Philos Backgammon sets previously. We are starting to recognise a consistent theme. They are unpretentious, luxury quality, backgammon sets. The simplicity of their design and the quality of their build makes them a serious contender when considering a quality Deluxe Backgammon set. Continuing the Cyclades theme. This particular backgammon set is named after the sacred Greek island of Delos. We have mentioned before that the Philos packaging is a little uninspiring. However, the backgammon set inside is definitely worth a look.

Construction

The Delos backgammon set has a simple, clean design in a cassette-style case. The entire board, cabinet and playing field, is made from sustainably sourced hevea-wood (rubberwood). The outer veneer has a sleek design. A couple of parallel lines are the only decoration apart from the natural grain of the timber. The hevea-wood outer cabinet has been stained walnut.

The playing field, including the neat, inlaid points, is also stained hevea-wood. There are three different shades to provide contrast. The set is held closed by a magnetic lock. It would be nice to have an option to secure the set with standard clasps. The magnetic lock seems susceptible to bumps and knocks. Finally, the outer board contains slots on both sides to hold the checkers and dice when not in play.

Dimensions

This is the larger size in the Philos backgammon range. Because it weighs a hefty 3kg, it’s not convenient to use as a travel set, particularly as it doesn’t have a handle. An attaché model would probably be a good addition to the Philos range. The dimensions of this quality backgammon set when closed are: 6.5cm x 49cm x 30cm (Height x Width x Depth).

Accessories

The set includes plastic dice and a doubling cube in shades of ivory and brown. The checkers are made from alder with one set a natural colour and the other stained walnut. The checkers are nicely sized and weighted. Finally, the set includes two hevea-wood dice cups, both stained in walnut. It’s a pleasing touch because so many backgammon sets include plastic or faux leather dice cups. Overall, the accessories are a welcome addition to this luxury backgammon set.

Conclusion

The Deluxe Backgammon team are really starting to appreciate the simplicity of these Philos backgammon sets. Solidly constructed, from sustainable natural materials. They meet all of the criteria of the Deluxe Backgammon team. Of all of the Philos backgammon sets, we have recommended the Delos has the simplest design and handsomely so. This is a quality backgammon set that could grace a home for generations. The Deluxe Backgammon team have no hesitation in recommending the Philos 1125 Delos backgammon set.

Nice looking backgammon set. I have a Philos Iraklia backgammon set, which I use weekly. It was a Christmas present from my wife last year. Good quality and solid construction. Philos is a good brand. Thanks for all of the playing guides, it is helping me improve my backgammon game.
